Latest Update: 24th April, 2009

World Day for Laboratory Animals today - 381,134 animals were used in experiments in Scotland in 2007. 92% of new drugs successful in animal studies go on to fail in clinical trials - and we don’t want mascara tested on rabbits. Yet, mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, horses, sheep, pigs, birds, amphibians, fish, cars, dogs and primates - all 381,134 of them – were shocked, infected, burned, poisoned, shot and surgically mutilated.

No more! London tomorrow sees the biggest march against vivisection in 25 years. The EU Directive governing animal research is being currently updated – unfortunately, the Agricultural parliamentary committee has already produced proposals that would weaken the protection to animals in laboratories.

But there is still time - all MEPs are now (for the first time) going to vote on EU Directive 86/609 in early May, and your help is now needed to ensure that the next vote goes in the animals’ favour.

Get in touch with your MEP today!! Email them here http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=5&ea.campaign.id=3157 and send them a letter (find out who your MEP is here http://www.europarl.org.uk/section/your-meps/your-meps and write to them at
Put MEP name here,
European Parliament, Palais de l'Europe, Strasbourg Cedex 67006, FRANCE

Its critical – your action is urgently needed! We’d be holding a stall tomorrow at Registry House to get more signatures and raise awareness so come along and make your voice heard.

We included a piece in our last newsletter about the – the ‘Red Squirrel Protection Unit’ – funded by DEFRA – who by their own admission do nothing for the red squirrels and simply and inhumanely kill the greys (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/oct/19/red-squirrels-protection) Angus MacMillian from Kill Hunting talks here about the nativeness of greys http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.environment.conservation/2009-03/msg00017.htm

Currently Kill Hunting are looking for photographic evidence that grey squirrels are not rendered unconscious with the first blow of a blunt instrument when they are chased into their sack from a trap or if they are not killed outright by an air gun pellet within the trap. Any firm evidence will allow the SSPCA to submit a report to the Procurator Fiscal. If you can help with evidence gathering, them get in touch!

Help Ban Canadian Seal Fur Imports: The Canadian Seal hunt has now begun - the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. The European Union will consider banning its trade in seal products in a few weeks, but the fishing industry and the Canadian government are lobbying furiously to fight the ban (http://planetark.org/wen/52327). Its critical to write to MEP's asking them to vote for a ban. Take online action here http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=5&ea.campaign.id=2991

Urge the EU to Help Millions of Animals in Laboratories: UPDATED: Thanks to all who wrote to the Members of the Agriculture Committee in time for the vote on the 31st March. Unfortunately, they voted out measures that would have afforded greater protection to animals in laboratories. In our last newsletter, we included the article on Grey Squirrels and their nativeness written by Angus Macmillan from Kill Hunting (
http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.environment.conservation/2009-03/msg00017.html) A reader brought another news story to our attention – the ‘Red Squirrel Protection Unit’ – funded by DEFRA, by their own admission do nothing for the red squirrels and simply and inhumanely kill the greys. At BunnyHuggers, we strongly believe that protecting and conserving a species cannot be at the expense of a life or suffering of any individual animal. See http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/oct/19/red-squirrels-protection

NatureWatch is now conducting a letter campaign to Chinese Government officials protesting unspeakable cruelty to domestic animals: The following is from a recent NatureWatch alert: ‘The vile and sickening torture of cats and dogs for human consumption in China is beyond belief. I won't go into any detail of how the animals are tortured in this email as it is far too gruesome, however you will find information on our website:
http://www.naturewatch.eu/youtube-videos The barbarity is so extreme, thousands of ill-fated cats and dogs take their last breath while enduring the most hellish suffering.’- If you want to add your voice to the protest you can contact the Chinese Embassy in your country from the following list: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/asia.htm

Did you watch the seal campaign on BBC1 last Sunday (Country File)? 5000 seals are shot in Scotland each year by salmon farming and angling interests.

MSP Robin Harper has tabled a motion for protecting seals. See

27th Mar

This week, we bring urgent e-actions – get political for animals! Right now the European Parliament is debating two critical pieces of legislation – a ban on the trade in seal products and regulations governing animal experiments. Please act now – see http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=5&ea.campaign.id=2991 and http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.campaign.id=2659&c=peta_Europe_enews (more info below)

We participated in Animal Aid’s Meat free month last weekend handing free ‘vegan’ meat to the public. We had an excellent response – in case you missed it there are still some copies of Animal Aid’s new booklet left – “Feed four for under a fiver” with fantastic recipes (which we’ve all been busy trying!) in case you want them.

We’ve got 3 very exciting event series coming up. Firstly, we are organizing a film series in Edinburgh and have confirmed dates, times and venues – put them in your diary now! Secondly, Ranting Rabbit is going for tour around Scotland. We are going to Galashiels, Perth, Stirling and St Andrews (dates and places in the diary below). Pop over to say hello! We'd like to visit more places in the coming months so if you could help us organise one in your area then please get in touch.

Finally, Dr. Nandita Shah is visiting Edinburgh (6th June) to deliver her celebrated Peas vs. Pills workshop. Learn how you can prevent and cure many illnesses, including obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer, digestive problems, menstrual and menopausal problems, joint pain, backaches and more by understanding what your body is telling you and responding accordingly. Recently - a dog was hit twice on the head with a blunt object and an attempt had been made to cut its throat in the Borders (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/south_of_scotland/7959377.stm) and another dead dog found tied to a fence post in Tayside (http://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2009/03/21/uk-scotland-dead-dog-found-tied-to-fence-post-information-required-by-rspca-and-police/)
